While some people find it easier to acquire breadth, others find it easier to go deep. That got me thinking, “What is more important for Leaders ?” – To have in-depth knowledge in your area of work or to be well versed in a range of topics related to your field ?

To be a leader who people would want to follow, one would need to build on both the depth and breadth of knowledge and experience.

How is depth important ? Depth allows you to command respect from people. It gets you noticed. You become the go to person for anything and all related to it. It displays qualities like commitment, dedication, focus, passion, interest etc. It gives you opportunities to explore different facets of an area. However, if you are not careful, it could narrow your vision.

Breadth broadens horizons, it keeps you humble. Cross functional exposure breeds ideas and innovation. You learn to see different ways of doing things. It generates awareness in you. However, if you are not an expert in an area, you may be considered a jack of all and master of none.

I think, Leadership requires you to switch between diving deep, to flying wide rapidly and without getting too much notice to do so. In addition to the depth and breadth, the flexibility to switch between the two is also a much needed skill. This requires you to be more comfortable with change, it demands openness and an inherent respect for people around you, no matter what their position.

Executive coaching helps you achieve exactly this – the skill of seamless transition of perspectives.

I would love to hear what you think ?

Bhavna Dalal is an ICF Certified Executive Coach, Leadership Specialist and Founder at www.talentpowerpartners.com.
