I have intentionally not mentioned employee engagement in the title to attract only those readers that understand that this will also address boredom at the workplace. This post may also somewhere be linked to work life integration as opposed to work life balance but you will have to read between the lines for that.

From having seen my kids being bored, to myself blaming my boredom to being a seeker of interesting things, somewhere I was always intrigued and terrified of “Boredom”. Only after practicing coaching, I could gather enough courage to go explore it a little deeper.

In essence, contrary to popular belief, boredom has not as much to do with time on hand but a lot to do with the energy of the protagonist. If you have extra energy in your system – any kind of energy physical, emotional, thinking, creative, logical; I will leave the labels to you – this extra energy is one of the causes for boredom. Where is this extra energy or shall we say un-utilized energy coming from and where does it go ?

There are many different ways in which your energy controls. When you put yourself in circumstances such that the energy is used towards things against your fundamental values and joy, this energy shows it’s counter productivity through boredom. When this extra energy is given at least some channels to do what you find joyful, you will find yourself being less and less bored and for shorter duration of time.

There is a certain restlessness that people that are bored often have; they even tend to wear it as a badge of honor ( yours truly admitting having been there in the past ). They shoot a hundred darts in different directions and a few fit the board and they are happy. What if you could manage that energy and just hit a few and all of them hit the bull’s eyes ?

Just imagine how much better a world we could create if this collective restless energy was used towards creating something meaningful and substantial.

We hardly ever pay attention to our energy or are sensitive to it to read it and then act accordingly. If we were to just try sense our energy through how we are feeling especially in extreme happiness , sadness and boredom, trust me you will find a goldmine to work with.
